Did you know it was gallbladder and bile duct cancer awareness month? We didn't either!

As our team educates and researches how cannabis can best work for our community, we continue to discover the wondrous benefits cannabis can bring to our society. Over the next month, as we honor those afflicted with biliary cancers, we will be releasing content to bring awareness to these types of cancer - as well as how cannabis can benefit these individuals.

Gallbladder and bile duct cancer patients are considered to have a "endocannabinoid deficiency," which means they lack the building blocks to make endocannabinoids within the body. Oh yeah, did you know your body already produces cannabinoids? So much to tell you, so little time.

But in the meantime, we'd love to share with you some of the alarming statistics surrounding diagnosis of biliary cancers -

  • It is estimated that around 4400 deaths (1,830 in men and 2,570 in women) from gallbladder and other biliary cancers will occur this year.

  • The 5-year survival rate tells you what percent of people live at least 5 years after the cancer is found. Percent means how many out of 100. The 5-year survival rate for people with gallbladder cancer depends on the location of the cancer and where it has spread (called the stage).

  • If the cancer is diagnosed and treated before it has spread outside the gallbladder, the 5-year survival rate is 65%.

  • But 1 out of 5 gallbladder cancers are diagnosed at this localized stage. WOW!

  • If the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 28%.

  • If the cancer has spread to a distant part of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 2%.

This is mainly because there is not a good screening method and the disease often grows without causing symptoms.

Because of this, many individuals diagnosed tend to be in more advanced stages of disease. Often dealing with many symptoms and looking for palliative care, cannabis can be a great option for these individuals.

Over the coming weeks, we can't wait to educate you on the topic.
